Wood siding is the most widely used form of residential siding. Wood offers the greatest variety in form, coming in large panels, shingles or individually horizontal boards. Because wood is porous, absorbing and giving off moisture, you must properly maintain wood siding to prevent deterioration.
Boards or solid wood siding, both horizontal and vertical has a breadth of styles including vertical board-and-batten; bevel or bungalow; drop tongue and groove; or shiplap. Shingle sidings are ideal if you are looking to achieve a rustic look.

Hardboard siding is wood-based and was the most common form of siding for several years in home construction. It also offers the most variety in terms of texture and how the wood is processed.
Traditional hardboard siding has been improved since the 1970s to reduce moisture infiltration and rot over the years. These various styles of hardboard planks make it a very popular form of siding for any home improvement or construction project.

Vinyl siding is one of the most popular choice for remodeling and new construction – it delivers the quality appearance of wood without the costly, time-consuming maintenance. Vinyl won't split, peel or rot. And because its color goes clear through the panel, it never needs to be scraped, stained or painted.
Easily adaptable to a wide range of architectural styles, vinyl siding is available in either wide or narrow horizontal board siding and comes in a wide variety of colors and textures.

Fiber cement or Concrete lap siding has the look of natural cedar siding and is available in a variety of colors. It is extremely durable and will not crack, rot or delaminate. Fiber cement siding also resists hail, mold, and mildew.
Paint lasts longer on fiber cement siding compared to most wood siding.

One of the advantages of metal siding is its low maintenance. Compared with some other choices, metal requires very little attention from a homeowner once it is properly installed. This is especially true for those areas of the country subject to severe winters. Snow, sleet, frost, rain, wind and even heat have very little effect upon metal. Metal also does not absorb moisture or promote the growth of mold or fungus, both of which can destroy a home’s framing and can pose health hazards to the occupants. Today steel siding comes in patterns and textures which mimic wood, and pre-painted metal can provide a homeowner with up to twenty years – or even more in some cases, of carefree living.

An exterior soffit is located on the span beneath the rafter tails, while the fascia is the exposed horizontal band you see at the end of the rafters. These architectural elements found along the eave area do more than just add visual interest and give a finished look to your home. They help protect the exterior of your house by keeping out pests like bats, birds and squirrels, and give you a way to disguise ventilation for your attic.
Making sure your soffit and fascia are installed correctly and properly waterproofed is the best way to prevent problems down the road. Damaged flashing or gutters that don't function properly can also create issues.
Once a year when you clean and inspect your gutters, that's the time to inspect your fascia and soffit for peeling paint and other problems.
